In the current economy, many managers have let career development fall by the wayside. Why focus on someone's future with the company if they might not have a future with the company, right? Wrong. Don't use the economy as an excuse to cancel staff meetings or forego development conversations. People are driven by achievement, affiliation, and power. Be sure all of your employees are working on something meaningful and challenging. Give them opportunities to work together and interact with others. Ask for their input on how things should be done and give them the power to influence outcomes. Engaged and focused employees may be the key to your survival
